Volcano Watch

We were on full Vog Alert last week in Maui. There's nothing like a little miasma of volcanic ash and sulpher dioxide (vog) blowing over from the eruption of Halema`uma`u on the Big Island eighty miles distant to make for stunning sunsets.

High concentrations of ash and sulpher dioxide emissions were enough to close Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island and the return of the feisty trade winds meant that ash and gas went sailing over Maui.

Omeloa beach on the Makena coast of South Maui is the perfect spot to observe a vog-enhanced sunset.

For a viewing of skies across the world - checkout the weekly Sky Watch at Wiggers World.

    Hello T.R.,

Thank you for having visited my blog! Yours is much more beautiful and interesting, especially for me who travel quite often abroad or within the country. I totally agree with your Ethical Traveler Guidelines!

And yes, I’m Turkish and live in Istanbul (when I don’t travel) :)

BTW, I used to work as a SCUBA instructor in Kauai...on one of my dives, I was eye-to-eye with two humpback males...by far the best experience in my entire life...

    Cheers,

  27. My partner is very jealous. He loves geology. I think that the happiest I've ever seen him is on the Big Island watching lava flow into the sea. Great photos.
