Legend of the Falls

This Sky Watch photo was taken yesterday at Iguaçu Falls in the southern state of Parana in Brazil. What a difference a day makes - from the gentle, clear waters of southeastern Arkansas to these crashing rivers and verdant green jungles in Brazil in a little more than 24 hours. Just another day at work, really.

The name Iguaçu comes from the Guarani Indians meaning big water: with 275 separate waterfalls -- its aptly named. Doug Taron of Gossamer Tapestry gets the Golden Globe award for correctly guessing the destination from an earlier post. Good sleuthing Doug.

Guarani legend has it that a god planned to marry a beautiful aborigine named Naipí, who fled with her mortal lover Tarobá in a canoe. In rage, the god sliced the river creating the waterfalls, condemning the lovers to an eternal fall. Well, beautiful falls or not, I am on the clock -- I'll post more images of the falls later this weeks along with some interesting mammals, birds and an especially cool butterfly for Doug. Adeu.

Wow! perfect one for Sky Watch. Happy SWF! We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made or only just happened... mine's up too hope you can drop by.

Why are there always legends associated with waterfalls? I've heard a similar one about a waterfall in Canada. Thanks for the story and beuatiful photo. I could "fall" right into it!

Gorgeous rainbow and a great Sky Watch!

I hollered out loud (and scared my cats) when I read this post. When I read your yesterday's ABC post about the American Black Vultures, I immediately Googled "South American Waterfalls," and the first place I clicked on was the Iguazu (sic) Falls. I spent a good 5 minutes toggling back and forth between the Internet photos of the place and your vulture photos (your photos of the falls are *much* better) but couldn't quite make up my mind that it was the same place. Wish I had gone ahead and thrown in my two cents worth.

I hope you had a great time in SE Arkansas, you world-traveler, you.

Great photos- but I'm mad jealous on this one. This is someplace that I've wanted to visit ever since I saw the movie The Mission. More, please! I'm looking forward to the butterfly photo.

Huh, that was some bright rainbow. It disappeared to a big waterfall too. Are you sure this wasn´t edited? If not, then you have been in a very beautiful place.
